How WorksiteCalc calculates

Every calculator is built around a published formula shown next to the result. Where a recognised standard applies, such as ACI 318 for structural concrete or ASTM C90 for concrete masonry units, the page names it. Results are planning estimates: each page states its waste allowance and what the figure does not include.

A worked example

Worked Example

A concrete slab 10 ft long, 10 ft wide and 4 in thick:

10 × 10 × (4 ÷ 12) = 33.3 cubic feet

33.3 ÷ 27 = 1.23 cubic yards

Adding a 5 to 10 percent waste allowance gives an order quantity of about 1.30 to 1.36 cubic yards.

Our calculator standards

Before a calculator is published on WorksiteCalc, it must:

  • show its formula and units
  • cite a standard where one applies
  • include a worked example
  • state its waste allowance and assumptions

Frequently asked questions

What is a construction material calculator?

It converts your project dimensions into the quantity of material to order, such as cubic yards of concrete, bags of mix, tons of gravel or gallons of paint.

How accurate are the results?

They are estimates based on standard formulas. Subgrade, local supplier sizes and site conditions change real quantities, so confirm figures with your supplier before ordering.

How much extra material should I order?

A waste allowance of 5 to 10 percent suits simple shapes. Irregular shapes and uneven ground usually need more.

Can I use a calculator result instead of a professional’s advice?

No. For structural work or major spending, consult a licensed contractor or engineer. See our Terms of Use.
